Paolo Domenico Finoglio From April 23th to August 29th 2010 For the first time in France, the ten monumental paintings by Italian artist Paolo Domenico Finoglio (1590-1645) inspired by Torquato Tasso's poem about the First Crusade, Jerusalem Delivered, will be shown at the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Lille. Finoglio was one of the great Neapolitan baroque painters influenced by Caravaggio's dramatic use of light. In this highly mature work, Paolo Finoglio represents ten episodes of chivalry and romance from the poem to celebrate the power and virtues of his patron, the count of Cover-sano. Commissioned for the family castle in 1634, Jerusalem Delivered, is an exceptional example of a work preserved with its original 17th-century presentation. The entire cycle will be shown, exceptionally, in the very centre of the museum within a contemporary installation by artist, filmmaker and writer Alain Fleischer. The presentation of these monumental paintings, which have hitherto never been shown outside their place of origin, will contribute to considering the history of uprooted, displaced works of art, an important issue for art history and museums in general.
